Program note:
Interpolations was written at the invitation of a colleague who was looking for music that incorporated the song of Mozart’s pet starling as, famously, dictated by Mozart. This tune, which closely resembles the main theme of the finale of his KV 453 piano concerto, appears in various transformations throughout the piece, along with (fake and unresearched) birdsong of my own. A more substantial Mozart quotation comes from his Fantasie in C minor, KV 396, an unfinished fragment for violin and piano that is sometimes performed in a solo piano version realized by Mozart’s contemporary Maximilian Stadler. Fifteen measures of this Fantasie appear essentially unaltered in the middle of this work, and my material before and after offers some commentary on this as well. Interpolations was first performed on March 18, 2023, in New York City.
