Program note:

Encaged was a collaboration with choreographer Erin Dillon, at the time a resident choreographer for Periapsis Music and Dance. We were offered the opportunity to present a new work on a program at Dixon Place, sharing the evening with Taylor 2 Dance Company. Erin and I decided it would be a dance solo and developed the work in tandem—I would send sketches of the music, she would develop some movement in the studio, and we would discuss what should happen next. By this point we had created several pieces together, and this was in many ways the smoothest collaboration and the easiest process. I think the work was quite personal for her, a quality I tried to match in the music. Erin provided the title, though we did not speak in depth about its significance. The premiere took place on November 8, 2018, and the work remained in the Periapsis repertoire for several years.
